How I’m Using Pinterest to Grow My Photography Business: My Journey So Far

Starting a photography business is a lot of work, and Pinterest has been an unexpected way of sharing my photos through social media. Here’s how I’ve been using it to document and show my creative work, as well as the challenges and insights I’ve experienced along the way.

Experimenting with Pinterest: Tracking Growth

I decided to post my photos on a Pinterest business account and document my growth. I’ve been doing photography on and off for a little over five years, mostly as a hobby. But in December of 2024, I officially started my business! Right now, I juggle a full-time job with my photography work, and though I don’t yet have the luxury of doing it full-time, that’s a story for another blog.

For now, I’ve been focused on growing my Pinterest presence. As of today, my Pinterest account has 8.9K monthly views, which is exciting to me! I remember just starting and seeing 1k. I’ve slowly been watching it grow for the past couple of weeks.

My Strategy: What I’ve Been Pinning and How often do I Post

When I started this journey, I knew consistency was key. I aimed to post three times a day. Initially, I just posted photos that I shot and edited—many of them can also be found on my Instagram. I began by sharing some of my older work, as it felt like a good starting point to showcase my growth as a photographer.

Why three? I also felt the rush of having something on my pinterest. So I decided to post 3 times a day. Will this change in the future? I honestly have not thought that far yet!

After my mphotography_photos board, I then created a new board titled The Photographer: Dreams, Travels, and Snapshots, which seemed to boost my impressions slightly. I noticed that adding a new board was a small win. Currently, I haven’t seen a lot of saves (meaning people are adding my work to their own boards) or outbound clicks (which means someone clicked the link that led them to my Instagram).

Why did I add another board about me? The Photographer? Again no real reason. I just felt like I needed to rush to get pins on my Pinterest. As of today, I have 214 pins. I don’t feel the rush of getting more pins of boards up on my pin anymore, but Ill probably still stick to three posts a day for now.

What’s Next: Looking Ahead to 2025

For now, I’m focusing on sharing only my original content—each pin links back to my personal Instagram or my photography Instagram. I haven’t started pinning others’ content yet or formed group boards (still trying to figure this one out) because I wanted to see how my approach would turn out. I still have hope that I will form a community and have followers interested in the pictures I take and the stories I tell.

Now that I have my website, I’m planning to update my Pinterest boards to include more about my blog. The Idea of starting a blog is why I started posting on Pinterest. I started pinning almost three months ago but I’m barely launching my website now! Again, I’m okay with it because I felt like I had to have something on my pinterest board before I had a website.

Tip for you: Now I see it really does not matter if I had started my Pinterest posting and Website at the same time! I could have started with a blank board with my first pin being about my first blog post and I would have been fine.

As 2025 is here, I’m excited to see what comes next. I may change my strategy, add new boards, or experiment with different types of content that relate to photography instead of just showcasing my own work. I’ll keep you posted on how things evolve and any tips I pick up along the way!

I’m excited to see how Pinterest helps me grow and learn more about using it strategically for my photography business. Stay tuned for more updates! If you used Pinterest for your business  I would love to hear your advice and comments about how I can better improve my strategy!
